Clearwater
If you haven't heard the story, it all began with a book Vic was given titled Sloops of the Hudson. Vic was a
history buff with a love of sailing ships that began in his boyhood years. While talking with his friend Pete Seeger one day,
he shared what he had learned about the once prolific ship. They daydreamed about what it would be like to find one and see
it sail on the river.
There were fundraising concerts, and along with Alexander Saunders Sr. and many other volunteers, a vision
of bringing people together around a dream gave birth to The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.
This story is told beautifully in a PBS film titled 'Til the River Runs Clear. It features archival footage
and interviews with Vic and others, and is available on the Clearwater website. Click on the link below and scroll down through
the catalog to Music and Media. And if you scroll down a little further, you'll find the set of six notecards featuring Vic's
wood engravings.

The Little Stony Point Citizen's Association
Little Stony Point is a sandy beach on the river just outside of Cold Spring. People have always used the beach, and
many local residents had growing concerns about the dangerous parking situation as well as the inaccessability of the site
to emergency vehicles should the need for them arise. The Railroad had condemed the bridge leading to the park and wouldn't
rebuild it because it did not meet their new height requirements. They also were concerned with the illegal track
crossing by people wishing to access the beach. It seemed that the park would be lost without a solution to their parking
and track-crossing problems. A small group of citizens formed this organization, and under the leadership of Michele Clifton
and then Vic Schwarz, parking was improved, grants were obtained and a new bridge was built. The park now even has restroom
facilities and LSPCA continues to care for and improve this beautiful site.
